Hot Pepper Challenge for ALS Awareness

Hot Pepper Challenge for ALS Awareness

In this chili challenge they guys at the YouTube Channel Whatever Chat are eating 5 peppers. Zack and Bryce are doing it for a good cause: raising awareness for the neurological disorder Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

In their hot pepper challenge they ate black Jalapeño, Serrano, Takanotsume, Habanero, and Apocalypse Scorpion Chocolate peppers. I grew the last, and presumably hottest, pepper.

If you are interested in how to grow peppers: growing peppers.

Jalapeño Black

First of all, they ate a black variant of the Jalapeño pepper.

The Jalapeño black is supposed to milder compared to the green one. As you may notice, eating this pepper did not really affect Zach and Bryce.

Scoville Heat Units:  2,500 – 10,000 SHU

Although I do enjoy the green color of the Jalapeño the black variant is way more beautiful with shiny and black fruits. Jalapeño black become dark red when fuly ripen! The Jalapeño black plants grow about 35 – 50 cm tall and is suitable for growing indoors in containers. It’s fruits grow 6 – 7 cm long, have a thick wall with juicy and mild flesh.

Serrano

Serrano Tampiqueno is a colorful pepper with medium heat. This pepper variety originates from Mexico and Serrano means “from the mountains”. It is assumed that this chili variety comes from the mountains, Pueblo and Hildalgo.

The fruits grow 3-5 cm long and are hot, regardless of if they are harvested green, orange or red.

This chili plant grows about 70-90 cm tall and produces a lot of fruits. that are between
Finally, the fruits are spicy and can be used in chili sauces, salsa, spicy hot dishes, or pickled in vinegar.

Takanotsume

I had never heard of this Japanese chili pepper before the guys at the Whatever Chat released their hot pepper challenge video. From what I understand, Takanotsume is widely used as a spice in cooking. Takanotsume chili peppers grow in dense upward groups. Because of this, they have become very popular as ornamental plants in the western world.

There are many different names for takanotsume: Hahong Koch’o, Poinsettia, Japanese Hot Claw, Eagle Hot Claw, to name a few.

The plant will grow about 50-60 cm tall and the chili peppers are 5-7 cm long.
Takanotsume pepper goes from green to deep red when ripen. As the plant produces a great amount of beautiful red fruits, one can use the Takanotsume as a decorative houseplant.

The chili pepper is not only beautiful but also has a special aromatic taste, and a heat of up to 50,000 SHU.

Finally, Takanotsume is supposed to be good to dry and use as a powder or chili flakes in cooking. This is definitely a pepper I will add to my grow list. Maybe something for the grow season 2019.

Habanero Pepper

Habanero is a classic pepper and have been measured over 300,000 SHU.
This chili pepper is one of my favorites to use in cooking. The Habanero pepper comes from Mexico and the plants provides plenty of small wrinkled red bell pepper like fruits.

The plant grow roughly 90 cm tall and the fruit goes from green to red when ripen.
Habanero chili peppers are an important ingredient in spicy food.

See for instance my Vegan Chili Recipe in which I use cocoa powder and black beans. Yummy with a rich taste!

Apocalypse Scorpion Chocolate

Apocalypse Scorpion Chocolate is the only pepper out of the five pepper eaten in the hot pepper challenge that I have grown.  AIASP, an Italian chili cultivation organisation, created this chili variety.

Apocalypse Scorpion Chocolate

I cannot find any information about the Scoville Heat Units. However, Apocalypse Scorpion is probably a cross between a Trinidad Scorpion and a 7 Pot chili pepper variety.
Apocalypse Scorpion Chocolate plants can grow up to 120 cm high and produced fruits that are elongated. The end of the chili peppers have something reminiscent of the scorpions stinger.

Moreover, the color goes from green to chocolate-brown when ripen. The peppers are really beautiful. I actually tasted a tiny piece from one of my peppers and it was HOT!

Hot Pepper Challenge

A hot pepper challenge is a food challenge that, obviously, involves eating hot peppers while filming it. Typically, the peppers eaten are high on the Scoville scale (i.e., super hot). Zach and Bryce ate 5 peppers (Jalapeño Black, Serrano, Takanotsume, Habanero, and Apocalypse Scorpion Chocolate).

As you may have learned by reading above the peppers are from mild to super hot! Hope you enjoy the hot chili pepper challenge:

Hot pepper challenges have been around for a while and, as previously mentioned, it is typically about eating 1 super hot chili pepper. I think that the Whatever Chat guys take on the hot pepper challenge is nice. They take it quite easy don’t yell and curse.  Just eating peppers and talking. Nice concept, I must say.
